Hi, I’m Bill, owner of the New England Beard Company! Back in 2018, what I like to think of as New England’s best beard balm manufacturing company was born out of necessity. I found that while there were many “good” beard-keeping products out there, I wanted one certified as “Wicked Good!”
I knew I needed to uncover the ever-elusive formula for the perfect beard balm: not too stiff, not too sloppy, but just right (think Goldilocks). I dirtied a lot of pots and pans and discovered things I never expected. For example, yellow beeswax turns white beard hair “circus-clown yellow,” white beeswax does not (don’t ask me how I know this). Nevertheless, after endless trial and error, I nailed down the foundation you find in the tins today.
Next came the fun part: concocting the scents that make New England Beard Company beard balms unique! Here are a couple of notes about scent oils. Never confuse “Essential Oils” with “Fragrance Oils.” They’re NOT the same. Essential Oils are naturally steam-distilled and steam-rendered, while Fragrance Oils are generally petroleum-based and therefore not something you want on your body (more often used in candle making). All that said, now you understand why I use only the purest, highest-quality Essential Oils available in all of my New England Beard Company products. Remember, I use this stuff, too.
Finally came the names, and that was pretty easy. Maine Guide, Foliage, Mount Washington, Old Ironsides, Cape Cod, and Quiet Corner, all give a full tip of the hat to the iconic locations that, in my humble opinion, make New England the greatest corner of the world to live in.
As for me, I was born and raised on Maine’s rocky seacoast and, after four years at Ithaca College, I relocated to Massachusetts to rescue my wife (although her name is not “Rapunzel” and may disagree that’s how the story went). The New England Beard Company is located in Plymouth, Massachusetts, about three miles west of Plymouth Rock as the Seagull flies, and also maintains its Southern Command in Vero Beach, Florida. We’re not a big company, but I like to think it makes a big difference in America’s beards!
